It has been reported that youth spend more time with media than any single other activity, except for sleeping. Consequently, this past decade there has been a significant surge in the number of reported incidents of cyberbullying; bullying that occurs through the use of electronic communication technologies, such as e-mail, instant messaging, social media, online gaming, or through digital messages or images sent via cellular telephones. Cyberbullying also commonly takes place through the use of websites belonging to certain groups, used and directed at maliciously targeting another individual or group.
Cyberbullying can be more disruptive than face-to-face threats and harassment because abuse that occurs electronically has certain unique characteristics.
